Taylor – Kempsville ’12

One of my 2012 seniors is Taylor, from Kempsville. As with many of my seniors, I first photographed Taylor playing sports. The sport of choice is softball. I’ve taken action shots from rec league to travel ball to varsity. After all these years, I’m priviledged to be Taylor’s senior photographer.

For Taylor’s session, we started of at the Botanical Gardens and finished at the beach with a great sunset. We had a fun time during her session. I’ve posted an action shot from the 2011 spring season, as well as some of Taylor’s senior pictures and storyboard.

Megan – Kempsville ’12

The following photos are from Megan’s photo session. Megan, a senior at Kempsville, was great to work with. She was so funny and we had a blast with her and her mom. It was a hot day and the bugs were driving us crazy, but we were able to capture some great images. Don’t forget to watch her music video at the bottom of the post to see more photos from her session.

Feel free to leave a comment and let us know what you about Megan’s senior session.

Varsity Football: Kellam vs Kempsville

When the Eastern Region decided to expand the number of teams making the playoffs a few years ago, the Beach District, with 11 teams, was forced to start their season a week earlier. The 2011 football season was scheduled to begin play on August 26. With Hurricane Irene approaching the area, all football games were postponed.

The district revised their schedule and the missed game would be played during the week. The Friday game would be moved earlier to Thursday, the makeup games would take place on the following Tuesday and next Friday’s game would be pushed to Saturday. In all, most teams would be playing 3 games in 10 days. A lighting storm on Thursday pushed that day’s game back to the original Friday. In order to get all the games competed in time, the revised schedule was kept as planned. So most of the teams will now play 3 games in 9 days. I’m sure there will be some sore football players in the Beach District this week.

The Kellam vs Kempsville game was played on Tuesday. Here are a few action shots from the game.

Varsity Field Hockey: Green Run vs Kempsville

Before I began photographing high school seniors, I started my photography career by covering sports. I still like to cover a varsity game whenever I have the chance. I currently shoot video and stills for the CBS Sports’ high school site (MaxPreps). I was also fortunate enough to have one of my photos published in sportsillustrated.com last year.

Many of my seniors play field hockey so I’ll try to get to one of their games for some action shots. Here’s a few shots from a recent game between Green Run & Kempsville. Field Hockey on grass, at each school’s field, is a lot different than the fast paced action at the turf. The turf is the U.S. National Training Center. Each week, a few schools have their games there and it is the host to several district, regional and state championship games.

2011 Kempsville Fashion Show

One of my 2011 seniors invited me to take photos at this year’s Kempsville Fashion Show. I went to my first high school fashion show last fall (Kellam) and I really enjoyed it. I agreed and brought Penny & Tyler with me. My seniors should remember Tyler as my #1 helper. While I took photos, he videotaped the event.

The theme of the show was The Fashion Network. Area stores donated the clothing that was used for the show. The students had a great time modeling the various fashions for the crowd. It was a great show and we had fun. I’ve posted a few photos from the show and included a brief video sample.

Feel free to share the post and leave a comment. If you would like us to cover your school’s next fashion show, just tell us in advance so we can get you on the schedule.

Cortney – Kempsville ’11

Cortney is another one of my 2011 seniors from Kempsville High School. Her senior session also included her friend Mia. We had a fun time with Cortney & Mia during our photo shoot. Mia’s dad tagged along and we had a great time with him as well.

We shot Cortney’s senior session at the beach, off of Shore Dr. I usually shoot one senior at a time, but it was a blast working with the two of them. We had a great sunset to end the session and we captured some great pictures.

Take a look at a few of Cortney’s pictures below and don’t forget to watch her music video at the bottom of the post.

Kiana – Kempsville ’11

We had a great time during our senior session with Kiana. We had a blast with Kiana and her mom. Kiana is a 2011 senior at Kempsville High School.

We started our session at the Botanical Gardens in Norfolk. We went to the Japanese Gardens, but it was closed for a wedding reception. We finished our session as the sun set at Nauticus and captured some great images.

I’ve posted a few pictures below. Don’t forget to watch the video at the bottom of the post.

Brittany, a 2010 senior from Kempsville High School, wanted to go to the beach for her senior pictures. We started off near the old Duck Inn Restaurant off Shore Dr. She brought her friend Lizzie for a few pictures of the two of them together. Once we finished shooting, it was down the street to First Landing State Park to finish the session. Once we were done, she wanted to add something a little different, so we ended the session with a “trash the dress” shoot. The water was cold at first, but once she got used to it, we were able to capture some fun images. Brittany and her mom were great to work with and we had a blast.

Erin, a 2010 senior from Kempsville, wanted to have her photo session at the beach. Upon arriving at 47th street, we discovered that a wedding was getting ready to take place. After a bit of brainstorming, we decided to head up to Shore Dr. and shoot where the Duck Inn Restaurant used to be.

Tyler and I had a great time with Erin and her mom & dad. Since the sun was still a little high in the sky, we shot some under the bridge and the old gazebo. It was a lot of fun and we created some outstanding images.

I’ve posted some of the photos below and be sure to check the video slideshow. Feel free to leave some comments and let me know your thoughts.

I’ve been out on location shooting so much lately, I’ve fallen a little behind in my blog posts. I usually post a few sneak peeks on facebook & myspace within a day or two of the session (FB & Myspace pages can be found under the ‘links’ button). Once I’ve processed the photos and created the video, then I’ll post about that particular shoot.

We had a great shoot with Rachel around the downtown Norfolk area. After starting out around Harbor Park, we headed towards Town Point Park. As always, we started walking and found a few awesome new spots. We had a blast with Rachel, a 2010 senior from Kempsville High School, and her mom. Rachel is a cheerleader and track athlete. She also cheers with FAME. It was fun talking with her mom about the contrasts I was trying to create between Rachel’s various outfits and the urban, edgy look of downtown. We did have the strange smells around the water taxi area, so we didn’t stay there long. We had a good laugh as Rachel’s mom was joking about her finding a place to change around the Half Moone Cruise Center. We finished up at the pier near Nauticus as the sun was going down.

We had a great time and a lot of laughs during the shoot and created some outstanding images. Be sure to check out her video slideshow at the bottom of the post. Feel free to leave a comment to let me know what you think. Enjoy.
