2012 Senior Model: Amanda – Ocean Lakes

As the end of the ’10-’11 school year fast approaches, we have started our search for senior models, to represent our studio, from the class of 2012.

Amanda is one of our 2012 senior models from Ocean Lakes HS. She, along with her mom, stopped by for her studio session. We had a lot of fun with Amanda as we tried some new backgrounds & lights. If she was nervous, she didn’t show it at all. We look forward to Amanda’s senior session next month. We expect to have a blast as we head to the beach and a few other locations.

Attention Juniors: Amanda will soon have some rep cards to pass out that will earn you discounts on your senior session. Be sure you get one from her and save some money.

We are still looking for a few senior models from several area high schools to represent our studio.

Wave of Relief: Surfing Contest

I was dropping off some canned goods at Juice Box Surf, at 16th St & Pacific, and I found out about the “Wave of Relief” surfing contest on April 23. 100% of the registration money was being dontated to the Red Cross’ disaster relief in Japan. I’ve photographed many sports, but not surfing, so I thought I’d go and give it a try.

It was cloudy most of the day, but it was a lot warmer than the previous day. Since it was my first time at a surfing event, I didn’t know the procedure, but I soon figured it out. I liked the differences in style between the short & long board events. Despite the clouds and occasional sun, there were plenty of opportunites for pictures. A few more nicer sets wouldn’t have hurt.

Thanks to Surf and Adventure, Juice Box Surf and all the other sponsors, surfers and spectators for helping the Red Cross and having fun at the same time. I think I need a little more practice in order to anticipate the movements of the surfers, but it was fun and I enjoyed the experience. I’ve posted a few photos from the event below.

PSD Experience

I’ve always wanted to attend a workshop to learn & improve my photographic skills, as well as meet other photographers. I finally had the opportunity at the PSD Experience. PSD stands for Photograph • Share • Discover.

The amount of education available was incredible and it was difficult to pick the program I wanted to attend each session. For a few sessions, I split time between two programs. Whether your primary focus is seniors, weddings, or pets; you have a big studio or a home studio; shoot natural light or use strobes & off camera flash, there was something for everybody. The education continued when the free shooting sessions began at midnight each night.

I really enjoyed my first workshop and can’t wait for my next one. It was great meeting all the other photographers from around the state and beyond. A special thanks to all the educators, models, stylists, hair & makeup artists.

I’ve posted a few quick edits of images captured from the event. I’ve also included a 2 minute behind the scenes video taken at the event. I attached my Flip MinoHD to the hot shoe of my Canon 5DMKII using a Manfrotto 482LCD. This way I could take photos and shoot video at the same time. You can see the lens hood when the Flip isn’t zoomed in a little. In the future, I hope to try using the 5D for shooting video. The video instructors were amazing as well.

I had so much fun, it was worth not getting much sleep for three days. Be sure to stay in touch. Until next time.

2011 Varsity Lacrosse

A sport I really enjoy covering is lacrosse. I don’t know how long it’s been around, but they didn’t have it at my high school (a long, long time ago). While many of the local private schools play LAX at the JV & Varsity levels, most of the public school teams have club teams. I really enjoy the speed & quickness of the game. Maybe one of these days I’ll learn the rules. Enjoy a few action shots from a few 2011 spring games. What do you think of LAX?

Alyssa – Ocean Lakes ’11

Alyssa is another one of my seniors from Ocean Lakes.

Our first location was the Botanical Gardens in Norfolk. We met with Alyssa, a friend of hers and Alyssa’s mom. Nature’s diffuser was in full effect as we had quite a few clouds overhead. We had fun as we shot throughout the gardens – that is until it started raining. We were forced to postpone the rest of her senior session.

For Alyssa’s make up session, we met at Seashore State Park (now First Landing). The weather was great and we had a beautiful sunset. This time we were able to finish her session without interruption.

I’ve posted a few of her photos below, along with a music video. Her video has more photos, along with some video footage taken during her photo shoot.
